What we collect, why, and how to have it changed or deleted.
Who we are
The Last Website (thelastwebsite.world) is a 3D globe of the real Earth with one million spots. Anyone can claim a spot and leave a name and a message on it. Questions about this policy: thelastwebsite1@gmail.com.
What we collect
- Your email address, when you claim a spot, manage it, or accept a gift. We use it to send you a verification code and emails about your spot (confirmation, a gift, a time capsule opening).
- The name and message you write on a spot. These are public: anyone visiting the site can read them, and they stay on the globe. Please don't write anything you don't want to be public.
- Gift details, if you gift a spot: the recipient's name, their email (if you give one, so we can send them the gift) and your note to them.
- Time capsule date, if you seal a message: it stays hidden until that date.
- Payments, for paid extras: handled by PayPal. We never see or store your card details; we keep the PayPal order and payment ids, the amount and its status.
- Hearts: when you heart a message, your browser keeps an anonymous id; we store only a one-way hash of it, to count one heart per visitor.
- Usage and technical data: pages and actions on the site (through Google Analytics and our own simple event log), error reports (through Sentry), and server logs including your IP address, used for security and to limit abuse.
How we use it
- To run the site: verify your email, keep your spot yours, let you edit it, deliver gifts and time capsules.
- To keep it safe: rate limits, spam and abuse prevention, and moderation of messages.
- To improve it: understanding which features people use and fixing errors.
- In our videos and social media posts, we only feature a message if its owner gave permission when claiming the spot (and then only the first name and place shown on the spot).
Cookies and browser storage
A sign-in cookie keeps you logged in to manage your spot (it expires after 14 days). Your browser also stores which messages you hearted and an anonymous visitor id. Google Analytics sets its own cookies to count visits. We show ads through Google AdSense: Google and its partners may use cookies to show ads based on your visits to this and other websites. See how Google uses information from sites that use its services and opt out of personalized ads at Google's Ad Settings.
Our social media accounts
We publish our own videos and posts on Instagram, Facebook, Threads, YouTube, X, TikTok and Pinterest, partly with automation tools connected to those accounts. These tools only post our own content; they don't collect data about you or the people who see our posts.
How long we keep it
Spots and their messages are meant to be permanent, so we keep them, with your email, for as long as the site runs, unless you ask us to remove them. Verification codes and sign-in sessions expire within hours or days. Database backups are kept for 14 days.
Your choices and rights
- You can edit the name and message on your spot at any time from "My Spot".
- You can ask us to show you, correct or delete your data, or to remove your message, by writing to thelastwebsite1@gmail.com from the email address you used.
- You can block or delete cookies in your browser; the site still works, but you may need to sign in again.
Children
The Last Website is not meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their data.
Changes
